Mawazine News - Baghdad
The Iraqi government confirmed, today, Saturday, that ending the work of the UNAMI mission in Iraq is consistent with the government’s vision in this file.
Government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi said in a statement to the official agency, “Iraq is a sovereign country and has recovered from the crises and collapses that befell it as a result of multiple wars, and now it plays a major pivotal role in the region,” noting that “Iraq requested in March of last year to reduce... The tasks of the UNAMI mission: In view of the stability in governance and the democratic system, the Security Council decided to form a strategic review committee, and that this committee should submit its evaluation of the tasks of the UNAMI mission at the end of February of the current year to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and that the Security Council should decide in the month of May this year according to What Iraq wants and the assessment provided by the Iraqi state.”
He added, "The Iraqi government welcomed the coming of the committee and opened the horizons for it to hold the meetings they wish to hold with all parties without any obstacle. The committee visited Iraq in November last year and held 250 meetings with various figures and governmental and non-governmental institutions throughout Iraq," indicating that “The committee submitted its report to the Security Council, which stated that there is a noticeable development at all levels, and the committee envisions ending UNAMI’s work in multiple stages and ending it completely in mid-2026.”
He explained that "the independent United Nations team sent by the Security Council, headed by German Volcker, to study the reality of UNAMI's work, also reached a conclusion, which is to terminate the UNAMI mission, meaning that it conformed with our government's vision in this file," stressing that "the Iraqi decision is in line with the text of the committee's recommendations." “With a difference in timing, as Iraq envisions completing the tasks at the end of 2025.”
He stated that "this indicates that the Iraqi government's request was based on its deep understanding of the facts on the ground and the positive developments it achieved, as well as on its advanced political understanding of what the stage requires of strengthening the work of national institutions and granting them their full role, and that" Iraq and the United Nations (have recommended the closure) The request was Iraqi and the recommendation was international, and there is no intersection at all, but quite the opposite. There is only a slight discrepancy in the transitional period during the closure (is it two years or a year and a half), and it is subject to discussion between us and the United Nations.”
He continued, “It began to take initiatives to solve the political problems that It was part of the mission’s political tasks, such as border problems with Iran, Turkey and the rest of the neighboring countries,” noting that it “concluded important agreements in this field with neighboring countries and succeeded in managing sensitive internal files such as the Kirkuk file, the relationship with the region, and other political files.”
He stressed that “ There are important files that Iraq will request technical support from the United Nations, such as the elections file, but this does not need to be part of the tasks of the UNAMI mission, but rather a special mission specialized in elections, and the specialized UN agencies will continue their work, including the Human Rights Organization, UNDP and others, and that the decision The Iraqi government does not conflict with the continuation of the work of these organizations, but rather the request is to end the work of UNAMI with regard to the political aspect,” noting that “Iraq values the role of UNAMI in the past two decades and their great efforts and sacrifices in their work, and Iraq does not forget these efforts, and they remain alive in the Iraqi conscience.”
He pointed out that: “In appreciation of these efforts and in line with the desire of the Security Council, the Iraqi government accepted the work of the Supreme Review Committee, and we commend their report, which we agree with in the assessment of the development taking place in Iraq, and we also agree with them on the principle of ending the mission’s tasks in view of Iraq’s recovery and stability.”
He stressed: "UNAMI's sacrifices must be praised, starting from Sergio Demelo, who was killed in 2003, up to Jenin Plasschaert
He added, "The Iraqi government welcomed the coming of the committee and opened the horizons for it to hold the meetings they wish to hold with all parties without any obstacle.
