    Russian chemists have developed technology that allows natural gas to be converted into hydrogen with a high degree of efficiency directly inside gas fields, which will reduce the cost of hydrogen production.
    The press service quoted Elena Mukhina, senior researcher at the Skoltech Center for Science and Technology of Hydrocarbon Production, as saying: “All stages of the proposed process are based on proven and not previously adapted technologies for extracting hydrogen from real gas layers. We have proven that the proposed method will convert hydrocarbons into fuel.” "Green" inside the gas field with an efficiency of up to 45%.
    The technology developed by the researchers will make the industrial production of hydrogen a safe process for the environment in the face of global warming, as the carbon monoxide generated during the production of “green” fuel will remain within the layers from which natural gas is usually extracted. To do this, it is sufficient to pump water vapor and a catalyst based on Nickel and aluminum oxide in the well, allowing hydrocarbon molecules to be split into hydrogen and carbon monoxide with oxygen molecules present. After that, pure oxygen or regular air is pumped into the natural gas layer, and the combustion process begins, where methane and other hydrocarbons are converted into hydrogen, which exits the well through a membrane that does not allow other gases to pass through it.
    Scientists tested the operation of this technology in a series of experiments in special reactors that simulate the production conditions prevailing within gas-bearing rock layers. These experiments helped chemists choose the optimal reaction conditions, including heating the gas to a temperature of 800 degrees Celsius and a high vapor concentration, where about 45% of the hydrogen could be extracted from the methane in the well.
