The Ministry of Transport has begun developing new river taxi stations and routes in Baghdad, as part of a project to activate river tourism in the capital, setting the second half of this year as the date for its launch to coincide with the summer vacation, to be an outlet for Baghdad families.
Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, Maitham Al-Safi, explained to “Al-Sabah” that the Ministry, in coordination with the Ministry of Water Resources and after the Tigris River levels rose in a way that allows the return of river taxi work, after a hiatus that lasted more than three years, is launching a project to develop new stations for the aforementioned taxi with modern designs. Pointing out that it attaches great importance to this vital project, as it represents a rapid means of transportation and a recreational tourist station for Baghdad families, through the use of modern boats and the construction of distinctive-style marinas that reflect the beauty of the city of Baghdad.
He continued that the second half of this year will witness the launch of the first of these stations coinciding with the start of the summer vacation, pointing out at the same time that the project will work to reduce traffic congestion in the streets, in addition to being a cheap and fast means of transportation.
Regarding the old stations, Al-Safi stated that the Ministry is working to rehabilitate and develop them and provide them with large screens and distinctive lighting, to make them sites worthy of attracting Baghdadi families in order to take a walk in them and move between the banks and areas of the capital in a comfortable and elegant manner.
