The Federal Reserve has announced that it will begin issuing new benchmark interest rates in the second quarter of next year, thereby providing a benchmark alternative to the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) used as a common standard for financial products.
The US central bank said the three new prices would be based on one-night repurchase agreements backed by US Treasury bills and bonds.
Confidence in Libor has been declining as a benchmark since the interest rate scandal, and also due to the fall in overnight bank loans.
