A group of Afghan Afghan "volunteers" recruited by Iran has killed two thousand members of the group during the five-year-old war in Syria.
More than 2,000 Afghan "volunteers" have been trained by Iran in Syria during their participation in the fighting alongside the Syrian regime in the past five years, Iranian media quoted an Afghan official as saying.
They belong to the so-called "Fatimid Brigade," composed of Afghan Afghan recruits, one of the main forces trained by Iranian officers to fight in Syria. It is known that Iran supports militarily the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against the opposition factions and jihadists.
"The brigade has provided more than 2,000 martyrs, and 8,000 of its members have been wounded since its intervention in Syria five years ago," said Hojjat-ul-Islam Zuhair Mujahid, an Afghan official in the brigade.
In recent years, Iranian state television has reported on the participation of Afghan fighters in the fighting in Syria on several fronts, especially against the organization of the "Islamic State" (Da'ash).
The Fatimid brigade is comprised of former fighters belonging to the Afghan Shiite minority (Hazara), which was fighting Taliban fighters, as well as Afghan fighters who fought alongside Iran during the war with Iraq between 1980 and 1988, according to the newspaper "Sharq" Iran. About 3,000 Afghan fighters were killed during the Iran-Iraq war, Mujahid said.
Iran gives its nationality to the families of foreign fighters who are "killed" in the conflict in Syria and Iraq. It also officially announces that it is sending "Iranian military advisers" to Syria, as well as "volunteer" fighters from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Iranian media regularly report on the deaths of "volunteers" or "advisers."
