TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian President Hassan Rowhani vowed not to quit his government because of protests in the country over rising prices and falling currency.
Rohani said in a televised speech that he was wrong to think his government was scared.
Referring to the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Tehran, he said the Iranians should unite in the face of US pressure and should "make America kneel," as he put it.
"We will face problems, we will face pressure, but we will not sacrifice our independence," Rouhani said.
Two-thirds of the Iranian MPs have asked in a letter to Rowhani to change his economic team to deal with deteriorating financial conditions, state media reported Wednesday.
"The poor performance of senior economic officials in recent years has increased citizens' mistrust," the IRNA news agency reported.
In a letter to parliament, the MPs urged Ruhani to work "urgently" and called for a change in the "leadership of the economic team", with everyone "dynamic" and "understanding" of the economic situation before the parliament "takes a decision."
The warning came in the wake of demonstrations and a rare strike witnessed by the Grand Tehran Bazaar, while Iranians protest against the deterioration of their economic situation.
The government's economic team includes vice presidents and ministers, as well as economic advisers to the president and head of the central bank.
The constitution authorizes legislators to dismiss ministers or declare a two-thirds majority vote, which could pave the way for the president's removal from the Supreme Leader.
Rowhani is under increasing pressure because of the country's financial situation and the Iranian currency has lost about 50 percent in the past six months.
The situation in the country has worsened since US President Donald Trump withdrew last month from the 2015 nuclear deal with the six world powers and announced tougher economic sanctions on Tehran.
Ruhani was re-elected in May 2017 after pledging to improve the country's economy and introduce social reforms.
He has faced a violent attack for weeks by hardline conservatives who condemn his policy of opening up to the West and accuse him of damaging the economy.
