The Iranian ambassador in Baghdad, Erj Masjedi, accused "gangs" of burning the Iranian consulate in Najaf on Wednesday.
"Some of the gangsters stormed our consulate in Najaf yesterday and burned it unfortunately," he said in a statement.
"The Iranians should make sure that what happened yesterday in Najaf never represents the people, the government and the political currents in Iraq."
"The Iraqi people have shown their love for the Iranians on more than one occasion, especially in the 40th anniversary of Imam Hussein," he said.
