The Parliamentary Oil, Gas and Natural Resources Committee revealed that the Khor Al-Amaya port has been permanently halted due to the non-implementation of its rehabilitation projects.
The port of Khor al-Amaya was built in 1961, along with the port of Basra, as it is used to export crude "Basra Blend" oil, with an actual capacity of 300,000 barrels per day. Both ports are located in the southeast of the Faw Peninsula in the Persian Gulf.
A member of the committee, Bassem Al-Gharibawi, told Al-Sabah: The committee had previously visited Basra Governorate, and noticed that the port of Al-Amaya was permanently stopped, while it was supposed to implement two pipelines so that Iraq could raise its oil production to 6 million barrels if approval was obtained. that.
He added that the committee also looked at oil pipelines that had been damaged inside the water, which prompted the committee to host the Minister of Oil and the general managers to talk about this issue.
And he continued that the advanced staff in the Ministry of Oil complained about the lack of allocations allocated in the previous budgets for the implementation of these projects, but they stressed the ability to carry out, develop and improve them to increase export capacity, and thus raise the state's oil revenues in the budget.
For his part, the expert in the field of safety and energy, Sabah Alo, told Al-Sabah: The oil outlets have not been developed since the first licensing rounds, including the Khor Al-Amaya oil port.
He added that in 2016 the minutes of the Basra-Aqaba oil project were signed, but its implementation has not started until today, although the country is in dire need of new outlets, especially since it has goals to increase production in 2027 to 6 million barrels.
And he indicated that Iraq recently signed with the French company (Total), after discussions that lasted for more than 3 months, an agreement to develop four projects at a cost of 27 billion dollars, the cost of the first phase is 10 billion dollars, and it includes projects to increase production, invest associated and free gas, and a project to draw water from the Gulf for fields. There was no future project to develop the export of oil and gas other than the large Al-Faw port, in which the milestones of completion were not clear for years.
Alo warned that Iraq is on the verge of great hardship in terms of exporting oil and oil derivatives if production develops and there is a surplus for export.
