Today, Wednesday, the House of Representatives will hold its extraordinary session to elect a new speaker after the position became vacant following the Federal Supreme Court’s decision last week to terminate the membership of Muhammad al-Halbousi (former Parliament Speaker) and Laith al-Dulaimi from the House of Representatives.
Yesterday, Tuesday, the General Secretariat of the House of Representatives announced the official termination of the membership of the expelled Speaker of Parliament, Muhammad al-Halbousi.
According to a document issued by the secretariat, it stated, “Based on the decision of the Federal Supreme Court No. (9) Federal/2023/2524) in 2023, terminating the membership of (Muhammad Rikan Hadid Al-Halbousi) in the House of Representatives for the fifth electoral cycle, effective from the date of 11/14/2022.” ".
The representative of the State Forces Bloc, Aqeel Al-Mandalawi, suggested that deciding the candidate for Speaker of the House of Representatives be postponed until after the end of the legislative recess of the House, that is, after the end of the provincial council elections scheduled for the 18th of next month.
Al-Mandalawi said: “Constitutionally, the Speaker of the House of Representatives must be elected and he must be present at the present time, but the file is subject to political consensus, and we believe that it is not possible for this file to be resolved, given that the (Sunni component) must agree to nominate an alternative to former President Muhammad.” Al-Halbousi.
In parallel with the termination of Al-Halbousi’s membership and presidency of Parliament, several speculations and expectations emerged regarding the person who will preside over Parliament, as a local agency quoted a source it described as informed, that “the latest developments regarding Al-Halbousi’s succession to head the House of Representatives is the nomination of Shaalan Al-Karim,” without mentioning further details.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Culture, Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani, yesterday, Tuesday, began his work duties after his resignation was rejected by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani.
A statement from the ministry stated, “Based on the Diwani order, in which Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani rejected the resignation of the Ministers of Culture, Industry and Planning, the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani, began his work duties at the Ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad, on Tuesday morning.”
Al-Badrani stressed, according to the statement, “working in the spirit of one team to achieve a distinguished cultural and intellectual product, and to highlight the role of the Ministry in the fields of tourism and archaeological work,” praising the role of “the exceptional role of the Ministry’s cadres, their hard work, and their spirit of yearning for change and development, closely and firmly linked to their history and civilization.”
