The director of the Commission’s office in the governorate, Mahdi Al-Tamimi, told Al-Sabah: “Basra is experiencing a tragic reality as a result of the increase in elements of environmental pollution, whether affecting the soil, air or water, and it needs a supreme emergency cell that must be formed by the Prime Minister.”
He added, "The data issued by the Commission's office bears terrifying numbers regarding the results of this pollution, most notably the major climate change that Basra is experiencing, as it is considered one of the parts of the world most affected by this change, which came due to the combustion of gases associated with oil and soil pollution as a result of the wars that the regime fought." The former, of which Basra’s share was 25% of what happened throughout Iraq, whether from fission bombs, phosphorus bombs, or bombs carrying depleted uranium.”
He stated, “The local government announced that Basra is free of sites contaminated with depleted uranium, which were estimated at 28 sites and spread over a vast area of the governorate, especially the north, southwest, and west of the governorate, as well as areas in the center. However, cleaning them requires a continuous monitoring process for a period of no less than "Two years."
Al-Tamimi warned, “of the gases that burn and are produced daily, which have very dangerous consequences, especially for children in the future,” noting that “one of the field research conducted on 100 children in the city district and outskirts of the Qurna district showed the presence of benzene gases or other polluting gases in The bodies of 70% of them are predisposed to cancer,” he said, blaming “the oil companies that lack the elements of oversight and modernization and the presence of an element of corruption, in addition to the reluctance to issue sanctions against the tardy companies, which has led to more pollution.”
He warned of “burying contaminated resources extracted from oil, such as magnesium-40, radium, and uranium, in scientifically incorrect ways, which increases pollution rates, not to mention water pollution, as the waters of the Shatt al-Arab carry dozens of contaminated elements and compounds, which has led to the water being unfit for drinking and human use.” The treatments that the local government spent tens of billions of dinars on studying were left on the shelves.”
The director of the Office of the Human Rights Commission in Basra pointed out that the governorate’s soil has been polluted with “more than 30 million projectiles and fission mines contaminated with uranium, and they are still spreading in the deserts, farms and areas of Basra,” indicating that “the organizations responsible for cleaning do not have the ability to quickly address the issue.” ".
He continued, "9 to 10 thousand cancer cases occur annually in the governorate, and these numbers could increase in the coming years if the situation remains as it is."
