    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday (April 25, 2024), MP Arif Al-Hamami revealed the secrets of the multinational “tsunami of begging” in Iraq.
Al-Hamami said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The phenomenon of begging exists in most societies, but in Iraq it has reached levels that need to be reviewed if we know that a not insignificant percentage of them are of foreign nationalities, which raises many question marks."
He added, "Begging carries with it very significant social and security harms, especially here we are talking about foreign nationalities," stressing that "many parliamentary committees, through official communications, are working to cordon off the phenomenon, put pressure on the Ministries of the Interior, and work to take a series of decisive measures to resolve the matter and push it back." To deport the beggars to their countries.”
He pointed out that "most of the foreign beggars come through Erbil with a visa. They move to Baghdad and the rest of the governorates through smuggling and then hide from sight before they are detected and legal measures are taken against them, including deporting them to their countries."
On Thursday morning, a security source announced the arrest of 35 people in a preliminary outcome of the security operation that began in the Al-Bataween area in central Baghdad .
The source told "Baghdad Today", "The arrest was carried out because they did not have any identification documents and were suspected of drug use and theft .  "
The Ministry of Interior announced early this morning the launch of a wide security operation, the largest in years, in the Al-Bataween area in the center of the capital, Baghdad. The Ministry’s media said in a statement received by “Baghdad Today” that “under the supervision of the Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, a wide security operation was launched.” It is the largest in years in the Al-Bataween area within the capital, Baghdad, at dawn today, Thursday. The statement added, "The operation involved hundreds of its officers and members, to arrest wanted violators, accompanied by a service effort to provide services to citizens and lift violations."
