Bild reported that some 270,000 Syrian refugees in Germany had been allowed to bring their families.
The newspaper quoted a government document that 431 thousand and 376 Syrians applied for asylum in Germany in 2015 and 2016, and said that 267 thousand and 500 of them will be entitled to reunite with their families in Germany.
The parties to the governing coalition, the Christian Democratic Party, which belongs to Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Christian Social Union and the Social Democrats, decided last week to approve exemptions for people who receive sub-protection if they face difficult circumstances.
The number of Syrian refugees after reunification could raise controversy by opposition parties less than six months before the general election in Germany, where the impact of immigration was one of the main points of the "Alternative for Germany" party. The issue of immigrants is no longer the headlines ahead of elections scheduled for Sept. 24.
Alexander Goland, a senior member of the Alternative for Germany party, commented on the upcoming figures for the reunion of Syrian refugee families, saying that "allowing so many people to bring their families to Germany is mad."
"Billions and billions of tax money are eating up and the social situation is going to collapse under our eyes," he said.
Recent opinion polls show that the popularity of the "Alternative for Germany" party ranges between 7 and 11 percent, exceeding the minimum requirement (5 percent) that entitles political parties to enter parliament.
The Syrians constitute the largest group of asylum seekers in Germany. They are increasingly receiving sub-protection instead of refugee status, which means that they have only the right to stay for one year but can renew the period.
