    A report issued by the French Senate (upper chamber of parliament), on Wednesday, that more than 17 thousand people under surveillance in the country on suspicion of "terrorism".

    According to the report, entitled "Local authorities and the fight against extremism," that "the people being monitored on suspicion of terrorism, the number reached 17 thousand and 393 people by early March last."

    The report pointed to "the presence of two thousand and 46 French citizens fighting within the ranks of the terrorists in Syria and Iraq currently, as well as 249 people are believed to have been killed in these areas."

    He explained that "the cooperation of local authorities with the state, and reported suspicious cases, would reduce the risk of terrorism."

    The report called on the state to "provide local authorities financial support, in order to strengthen the fight against extremism efforts."
