America: The success of an experiment to intercept an intercontinental ballistic missile

    Editorial Date: 2017/5/31

The US military said on Tuesday it had successfully conducted its first missile defense test, including simulating an intercontinental ballistic missile attack, as an important milestone for a program to defend against the growing threat posed by North Korea.
The US military fired a ballistic missile from the island of Kwagaleen Atoll in the Marshall Islands to the waters south of Alaska, and then fired a missile to intercept from the Vandenberg air base in California.
Experts compared the experience by striking a shot with another shot and explained that the difficulty had increased because of the vast distances in the experiment.
The Missile Defense Agency said it was the first live test to intercept a ballistic missile under Boeing's ground-based MedCorps defense program and hailed the test as an "extraordinary achievement".
"This system is very important to defend our country and this experience shows that we have credible deterrent power against any real threat," said Jim Serring, director of the Missile Defense Agency.
"This is one of the elements of an expanded missile defense strategy that we can use against potential threats," Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis told reporters.
Prior to the experiment, the ground defense program Medcourse had successfully hit its target in just nine out of 17 trials since 1999, and the last experience was in 2014.
