Some Sri Lankan banks stopped buying the Qatari riyal on Tuesday, saying their counterparts in Singapore advised them not to accept the Qatari currency, a day after the biggest Arab power cut ties with Doha.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Qatar in a coordinated move and accused Doha of supporting "terrorist and sectarian groups" and Iran.
Traders in four private local banks told Reuters they had stopped buying the Qatari riyal.
"The banks in Singapore have asked us not to buy the Qatari riyal," a senior currency trader at one of these banks told Reuters.
A trader from a government bank said traders were waiting for the central bank's guidance on the Qatari riyal. The bank had been buying the riyal against 39.09 Sri Lankan rupees in the past, compared with 39.40 in Monday's close.
"There is an adjustment in the Qatari riyal after some banks stopped buying it," he said.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka denied in a statement that it had told banks "not to accept the Qatari riyal" as reported by some local media.
A senior central bank official said the bank would discuss the Qatari riyal at a meeting on Tuesday.
Officials at the country's main airport told Reuters passengers had complained that banks at the airport had stopped buying the Qatari riyal.
