TEHRAN (FNA)- Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari underlined the need for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, and stressed that his country will no way turn into a launchpad for third-party attacks on Syria.

"Iraq will not turn into a base for attack on Syria and Baghdad continues to emphasize on the political solution" to the Syrian crisis, the Iraqi foreign minister said during a joint press conference with his visiting Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Baghdad on Sunday.

“Only the Syrian people can resolve their problems and if Syria comes under a military strike, the political solution will be delayed,” he added.

The Iraqi foreign minister underlined that the Geneva II conference is for the Syrians and the mission of all parties is to prepare the grounds for a peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis.

In similar remarks earlier today, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama Nujaifi also warned of the dangerous situation in Syria, and stressed that all political groups in his country are opposed to a military strike on the Muslim country.

"We have come to an agreement with all political leaders in Iraq to oppose any military attack against Syria," Nujaifi told reporters in Baghdad today.

He described the situation in Syria as dangerous, and underlined the necessity for a political settlement of the Syrian crisis.

"Military act will have no benefit for the region and these are the Syrian people who should decide about their political future," Nujaifi underlined.

The call for military action against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the Syrian government of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.

Damascus has vehemently denied the accusations, saying the chemical attack was carried out by the militants themselves as a false flag operation.
