Dhi Qar (IraqiNews.com) A police officer was killed on Tuesday in an armed attack north of Dhi Qar governorate by unknown assailants, a police source told Alsumaria News.

“Unknown assailants opened fire late last night against a police officer, 33, while returning home by his own car in Al Dawaya area, northern Dhi Qar, leading to his death,” the source said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added that security forces cordoned off the crime scene and took the body to the forensic medicine department.

The source did not mention any details about the motivations for the murder.

Bombings and armed attacks are seen on almost a daily basis against security members, paramilitary groups and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake IS-occupied areas in 2016.

More than 700 Iraqis were killed and wounded during the month of June as result of violence and armed conflicts, according to a monthly count by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) which excludes security members deaths. Baghdad ranked the second place with 22 deaths and 88 injuries.

According to observers, IS is believed to constitute a security threat even after the group’s defeat at its main havens across Iraqi provinces.
