Qatar signs deal to buy 5 billion dollars worth of marine parts from Italy

    20:40 - 02/08/2017

Qatar's foreign minister announced Wednesday the signing of a deal to buy seven Italian naval vessels worth 5.91 billion dollars under a military cooperation agreement between the two countries.

Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani announced the deal at a news conference with his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano in Doha after talks on ending the dispute between Qatar and the four Arab countries.

Mohammed said he was pleased to announce the completion of the deal between the Qatari Emiri Navy and the purchase of seven Italian naval vessels as part of the joint military cooperation between the two countries.

He said the deal was valued at about 5 billion euros but gave no further details or disclosed the names of the participating companies.

In June last year, Italian state-owned ship Vincantieri said it had signed a four-billion-euro deal to build ships for Qatar.

At that time, the company said it would provide Qatar with four warships, two support ships and an amphibious landing platform, as well as support services for Qatar for 15 years after delivery.

All ships would be built in Italian shipyards and construction would begin in 2018. An official at the Leonardo defense company said the company would supply ships with electronic equipment and weapons systems for about a third of the deal.
