Assad's adviser: The war is drawing to a close


The six-year-old war is coming to an end with foreign countries stopping to support opposition fighters, Buthaina Shaaban, adviser to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has vowed that the government will face "any illegal presence on our soil," whether American or Turkish.

The organization of Syria for the Damascus International Fair for the first time since the outbreak of the war is a clear indication.

"The return of the Damascus International Fair at this time and the public and international attention is very symbolic and sends a message that the war is over and terrorism is defeated and that we are at the beginning of the road towards reconstruction," she said.

With the help of the Russian air force, Damascus has gained control over most of the country's densely populated west and is now moving east towards the Deir al-Zour area near the Iraqi border.

"The war, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands, has reached the pre-final stage, with the change of external forces that have supported opposition fighters to their policies," the president's adviser said in remarks to Lebanon's Al-Miyadad television channel.

US President Donald Trump ended US Central Intelligence Agency support for opposition groups fighting to topple Assad. Turkey, one of the main opposition supporters, has turned its priority to overthrow Assad in an effort to repair ties with Russia and curb Kurdish expansion near its border.

"As we have defeated terrorism, we will fight any illegitimate presence on our soil, whether it is the United States or Turkey, and this is one of the challenges we will face in a timely and appropriate manner," Buthaina Shaaban said.

US troops based in northern Syria are helping Kurdish-led fighters to expel a populist from the city of Raqqa.

Washington also has a garrison in the southeastern desert of Syria near a strategic border crossing with Iraq to train opposition fighters against a staunch fight.

"The Damascus International Fair and the Book Fair confirm that the turnaround has been achieved" in the conflict, the Syrian president's adviser said. "The transformation has already taken place and has been imposed by the Syrian Arab army and its allies since the liberation of Aleppo from terrorism."

However, the multi-lateral conflict is still raging on several fronts in various parts of the country, and the Islamic state has lost lands in favor of various parties.

While the government has forced a number of major opposition pockets to surrender in the past year, the opposition still controls large areas of land, including its stronghold in Idlib and Jib province near Damascus.

The battle against the opposition in western Syria has slowed down recently after a series of ceasefire deals, including a Moscow-Washington deal in the south-west of the country. Finished

Interesting fonz but, when I saw 'Okie'  I was transported to a different time LOL. I know nothing has happened in all these years to prove or disprove anyone but, took me back to a place when there was a new, for sure RV, right around the corner, ah the good old days!!! Who knows maybe we are closer than we know...sure would be nice...

i thought that "okie" sounded familiar, he's the yayhoo that always kept hollering that it was gonna rv tomorrow, next week, next few hours, blah blah, blah. of course if anybody knows anything about me, they know that i will believe it when i see it and not a minute sooner. just thought it was an interesting article. got it off of dinar recap
