Minister of Interior announces the arrest of an Iraqi government official escaped by gunmen from the arrest in Baghdad
Shafaq News / Interior Minister Qassim al-Araji announced on Tuesday the arrest of an official in the Iraqi government accused of financial corruption cases escaped by gunmen from the arrest of a security center in the capital Baghdad.
The media adviser to the minister had announced earlier in the day that Araji ordered "the formation of a commission of inquiry to investigate the smuggling of Jaafar.
"The fugitive, Issam Jafar Alawi, the former head of the agricultural equipment company, was arrested within hours at the Shalamjah border post after being smuggled from Ziyouna police station overnight by gunmen," Araji said in a statement.
Shalamjah is a border post between southern Iraq and Iran. The former governor of Basra, Majid al-Nasrawi, fled to Iran after his resignation and was convicted of financial and administrative corruption.
