(Reuters) - Turkey said on Saturday that it and groups backed by Syria's armed opposition would launch a military operation in Syrian Idlib, where a coalition of militants hampers efforts to impose a truce between gunmen and the Syrian government.
Idlib and surrounding areas in northwestern Syria are among the biggest strongholds of Syrian opposition groups fighting forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad but are increasingly falling into the hands of militant factions.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the process, part of an agreement to reduce the escalation agreed by Turkey, Iran and Russia, includes the crossing of Syrian opposition groups to Idlib with the support of Turkish soldiers from within the Turkish border.
"There is a big operation in the Syrian Idlib today and it will continue because we must extend a helping hand to our brothers in Idlib and to our brothers who arrived in Idlib," Erdogan said in a speech to his Justice and Development Party.
"Now this step has been taken," he said, adding that Turkish forces had not yet entered Idlib and that it was a FSA operation so far.
"Russia, an ally of Assad, supports the operation from the air," he was quoted by NTV news channel as saying.
The alliance of the Sham Liberation Organization controls most Idlib. The alliance leads the Fatah al-Sham front, which severed ties with al-Qaeda last year and changed its name from the Nasra Front.
"We will never allow a terrorist corridor along our border with Syria," Erdogan said. "We will continue to take other initiatives after the Idlib operation."
The Northern Liberation Front has vowed to continue fighting the Syrian government and its allies, casting doubt on an agreement to reduce the escalation, but Ankara is working to coax militants and split two factions of the hardline alliance.
Turkey launched an incursion into Syria to the east of Idlib last year to support the FSA factions in the Furat Shield campaign against the organization of the Islamic state and Kurdish groups.
"The factions that are part of the Euphrates Shield campaign, which was launched last year along Turkey's border with Syria, have not yet started the operation," said Mustapha al-Seiji, a member of al-Mutasim Brigade affiliated with the Free Syrian Army.
"The Syrian Free Army, with the support of the Turkish forces, is fully prepared to enter the area, but until now there has been no movement."
Erdogan said last month that Turkey would deploy troops in Idlib under an agreement to reduce the escalation brokered by Russia in August.
Another opposition faction of the Free Syrian Army told Reuters it believed there was an imminent raid on northwestern Syria.
The Hamzah Brigades, also part of the Euphrates Shield campaign, broadcast an online video of what it said was a convoy of troops heading towards Idlib.
Residents near the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey in Syria sent Reuters pictures of what they said was a section of the border wall being removed by the Turkish authorities.
Idlib's population has increased to at least two million as thousands of civilians and fighters leave areas under the control of the Syrian army in other parts of the country with the help of Russian planes and Iranian-backed factions.
