    Baghdad - Agencies
More than 33,000 people have drowned trying to reach the shores of Europe this century, making the Mediterranean "the world's largest border area of death and far behind," the International Organization for Migration said.
The United Nations agency said in a report that after the arrival of a large number of arrivals between 2014 and 2016, the agreement between the European Union and Turkey to stop the arrival of migrants through Greece and the deployment of patrols off the coast of Libya to reduce the number of immigrants significantly.
The figures at the European University Institute in Florence and the author of the report, Philippe Vargis, said the figures probably underestimate the actual magnitude of the human tragedy.
"The report says that at least 33,761 migrants have been reported dead or lost in the Mediterranean between 2000 and 2017, the figure for the period to 30 June."
"The report concluded that the European border in the Mediterranean Sea is the world's bloodiest and by far."
According to figures from the International Organization for Migration that about 161 thousand migrants and refugees arrived in Europe by sea this year so far, and 75 percent of them arrived in Italy while the rest arrived in Greece, Cyprus and Spain.
Some 3,000 people have been sinking or missing, FAO said.
"Closing the shorter and less dangerous roads could open up other roads," said Vargis.
Although sea access to Italy has been down about a third this year, there has been an increase last week in rescue operations and attempts to cross.
Coast Guard officials said the Libyan coastguard, backed by the European Union, on Friday intercepted more than 600 African migrants, mostly sub-Saharan women, including women and children of the total five boats left the coast east of the Libyan capital Tripoli.
The coast guard in Italy said on Wednesday and Thursday that about 1,600 migrants from about 20 ships had been rescued in the middle of the Mediterranean.
