     Baghdad / Sky Press:

The US Embassy in Baghdad on Monday expressed concern that there were cases of forced displacement of displaced persons, calling on the federal government and local authorities to ensure a safe and voluntary return.

"The US government reaffirms the support of the United States government for the safe, dignified and voluntary return of those displaced by military operations aimed at a desperate defeat," the embassy said in a statement.

"It is following with deep concern the reports of forced displacement of camps and displacement centers in Anbar and other areas, including parts of Salahuddin," she said.

"While we strongly support the initiatives of the Government of Iraq to help displaced people to return to their homes, we believe that the real way to make these initiatives successful is to have the full and informed consent of the individuals and families concerned."

The embassy concluded by saying that "forcing individuals to return before they are ready and feel safe to do so threatens their welfare and safety and may lead to their displacement again," calling on "federal and local authorities to ensure a safe and voluntary return of the displaced"
