    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]Members of the UN Security Council began Saturday evening to discuss a draft resolution condemning US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.[/ltr]
[ltr]Reuters and AFP, which obtained a copy of the one-page project, reported that the document was distributed among members of the Security Council by Egypt.[/ltr]
[ltr]The two agencies explained that the text of the draft resolution stresses that "any unilateral decisions relating to the status of Jerusalem have no legal effect and must be abolished."[/ltr]
[ltr]However, the document does not mention the United States or Trump's decision specifically.[/ltr]
[ltr]Reuters and AFP quoted diplomatic sources as saying the Security Council could vote on the draft by Monday or Tuesday.[/ltr]
[ltr]The adoption of the draft requires the approval of nine members of the Council out of 15 with no vote against it by any of the permanent members of the Council, namely Russia, the United States, Britain, France and China, which has the right of veto.[/ltr]
[ltr]This move comes in response to the US president's announcement on December 6 that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and begins transferring its embassy there to the holy city of Tel Aviv.[/ltr]
[ltr]Trump's decision triggered a wave of anger in the Arab and Muslim worlds, as well as criticism from most Western countries.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Palestinians adhere to East Jerusalem as the capital of their hoped-for state, based on the resolutions of the international community, which does not recognize all the consequences of Israel's occupation of the city in 1967, annexed it in 1980, and declared East and West Jerusalem "a united and eternal capital".[/ltr]

The UN Security Council is considering a draft resolution that affirms that any unilateral resolution on the status of Jerusalem has no legal effect and should be rescinded in response to the United States' declaration of recognition of the city as the capital of Israel. Egypt put the draft resolution on Saturday, and diplomats said the council could vote on it, starting on Monday.

The draft resolution stresses that Jerusalem is a "matter to be resolved through negotiations" and expresses "deep regret over the recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem", without specifically referring to Trump's move. The draft resolution affirms that "any decisions and actions appear to change the character, The demographic structure of "Jerusalem" has no legal effect and is null and void.

"They expect the United States to veto the draft, while all the other 14 member states are expected to support the text," diplomats said.

The United States found itself isolated in the UN Security Council last week when all 14 member states, including Britain, France and Italy, condemned the resolution on Jerusalem.

On December 6, US President Donald Trump announced the transfer of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, sparking a wave of condemnation in the world. The repercussions of Trump's Jerusalem decision, a departure from US policy Which has been in place for decades, with angry demonstrations in Arab and Islamic countries, as well as clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967 and declared it its eternal and unified capital in 1980, a move not recognized by the international community, including the United States. The Palestinians want to make East Jerusalem the capital of their desired state. The status of Jerusalem is one of the most difficult issues to settle the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
