US Defense Secretary James Matisse said on Tuesday that Turkish operations in the Syrian town of Afrin diverted attention from efforts to defeat a staunch organization.
The Turkish operation in the Afrin area is aimed at the Syrian-backed Kurdish-supported units of the United States, which Ankara regards as a terrorist group and an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been waging a rebellion in southeastern Turkey, where Kurds have been concentrated since 1984.
The United States has no troops in Afrin, Where the attack is concentrated, but deploying forces in Manbaj to the east, raising the prospect of a conflict between forces allied with Turkey and the United States.
The United States hopes to use the control of the people's protection units in the region to give it the diplomatic leverage Washington needs to revive the UN-led talks in Geneva for an agreement ending the Syrian civil war.
The statement comes as French Foreign Minister Jean-Louis Le Drain expressed concern about the Turkish military operation in northern Syria, calling on the Ankara government to exercise restraint in its operations against Kurdish forces in the region.
"I had the opportunity to tell my Turkish counterpart ... that this attack worries us."
"While we understand Turkey's concern about border security, we can only call on Turkey to show maximum restraint in this regard."
