The Belgian Interior Minister Jan Gambon, on Thursday, the numbers of Belgian citizens belonging to the organization "Da'ash" and detainees in Iraq and Syria , while confirmed his refusal to return to the country.

"Fourteen Belgians among the extremists detained in Iraq and Syria since the military defeat of the organization to support the terrorist," Gambon said, adding that their return "is not in the interest of the country."

It is the first time the minister has accurately identified the number of "Belgian extremists" in areas that have been restored from the organization since 2017.

He was speaking Wednesday night before a parliamentary committee and published his remarks on Thursday night.

"There are two Belgians currently detained in Iraq, as opposed to 12 Belgians currently in Syria, either in detention or in a refugee camp," he said, adding that "this information is based on the statistics of the Belgian commission charged with assessing the terrorist threat."
