New South Korean president sentenced to eight years in prison

South Korean President Park Gyeon-hye was sentenced Friday to six years in prison for receiving embezzled money from the intelligence service and two years in prison for illegally interfering in the elections.
Park, 66, is serving a 24-year sentence under a verdict in April in a major corruption scandal that led to massive demonstrations.
The former president did not attend the Central Seoul District Court, which sentenced her to six years in prison after being convicted of embezzling intelligence funds and two more years for improper interference in the selection of candidates for the 2016 legislative elections.
The sanctions have not been combined so the president will have to spend 32 years in prison.
Park has been convicted of receiving 3.3 billion won (2.6 million euros) that had been embezzled from intelligence funds by the heads of these agencies.
"The defendant received three billion won over three years from the three intelligence chiefs and caused heavy losses to the public treasury because of its crime," the court said.
Three former heads of the intelligence service said they had stolen money from their organization's funds on orders from Park.
Prosecutors accuse Park of using the money to maintain her own home and finance a shop where her friend Shui Sun-sil would make clothes and offer other services, including massage.
