BEIJING (Reuters) - China called on Britain on Saturday not to interfere in its internal affairs after Britain's foreign secretary demanded an independent inquiry into recent protests in Hong Kong.
British Foreign Secretary Dominique Rapp called for an investigation on Friday after a telephone conversation with Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, the Foreign Office said in a statement.
"It is simply wrong for the British government to contact the Hong Kong chief executive directly to exert pressure," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement.
"The Chinese side earnestly urges the United Kingdom to stop interfering in China's internal affairs and stop making indiscriminate and sensational accusations about Hong Kong," she said.
Hong Kong was no longer a British colony and the United Kingdom had no supervisory rights over them
