The shields worn by US soldiers are known for their durability because they protect military personnel on the battlefield, whether it is the threat of bullets or flying fragments from explosions, but the US military is betting on further improvements in the future.
Since the soldier carries a heavy weight of approximately 50 kilograms, owing to the burden of protective shield and other equipment such as a piece of arms, this is an obstacle to the movement of military personnel in the field.
The US military gives priority to the soldiers' agility at the moment, but the performance will improve significantly, according to experts, if the current shield performance increased by 14 times, and this is what the researchers are working on, for the time being.
The new shield project is being conducted as part of a collaboration between the US Army Research Laboratory and the prestigious University of Buffalo, according to Poplar Mechanics.
The idea is to reproduce nanomaterials that can better destroy the energy they are exposed to, which will diminish the strength of the soldier's impact.
If the project is successful, the new shield will be 64 percent more resistant, eight times stronger than steel, and the positive is that the shield will be lighter.
The weight of the shield is likely to be reduced to 15 kilograms, mainly made of synthetic fibers such as Kevlar and Denima, both in metals and in ceramics.
