The Minister of Water Resources, Mehdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, announced, on Sunday, that the Turkish parliament approved a memorandum of understanding that obliges Ankara to release the equitable water share for Iraq. Al-Hamdani said that “the Turkish special envoy confirmed the existence of agreements on the horizon and memoranda of understanding that will be in the near future,” stressing that the Turkish parliament approved the memorandum of understanding that obliges Turkey to release a fair and equitable water share for Iraq.
Al-Hamdani added: This issue was followed by an Iraqi executive protocol presented by the Iraqi government. The Minister of Water Resources indicated that his country "held about 6 meetings with the Turkish side during this period, and this has not happened for years."
And Al-Hamdani had previously stated, on the tenth of last January, that his country would face a scarcity of water if no agreement was reached with Turkey.
The minister revealed, at the time, that we have a desire to settle the water file with Turkey, but the latter wants two months to study, indicating that the water crisis in Iraq began to rise to the surface with Turkey announcing the start of filling the "Ilisu" dam, which the Iraqis feared would cause a wave of Drought.
The "Ilisu" dam was opened in 2018, and its water reservoir began filling on June 1 of the same year, and the dam was built on the Tigris River near the village of "Ilisu" and along the borders of Mardin and Sirnak in Turkey. In July of last year, the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture warned that the agricultural sector in the country was affected due to the failure to reach a solution to the water crisis with the Turkish side.
