Economists suggest establishing buffer stores to reduce the value of food commodities

Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
Economists predict an increasing rise in the prices of food commodities, while they suggest establishing "buffer stores" to control the situation.
The price of one carton of oil reached (3) thousand dinars, after it was (1500) dinars, while the price of a bag of milk increased to (2500), after it was (1500).
The price of a kilogram of sugar increased to 1,500 dinars, after it was 750 dinars, and the prices of legumes of all kinds and rice increased by (750-1000) dinars per kilogram. The prices of red and white meat, table eggs, fish and dairy also increased. Yesterday, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi directed that decisions be taken to counter rising prices.
Al-Kazemi said during the Council of Ministers session, followed by (Al-Mada) that “the high prices of some foodstuffs that are manufactured and produced locally are an attempt by weak souls and some greedy merchants to confuse the social situation and to take advantage of the citizens' demand to buy food as a result of the approaching month of Ramadan. As it happens annually ”.
He added, "The Ministry of Interior and Economic Security has directed to take appropriate measures to prevent tampering with the citizens' food, stop the greed of some traders and follow the markets," noting that "we have directed to provide all support to the ministries of agriculture and trade to work with the utmost efforts to provide flour. It is unacceptable for the price of flour to rise under false pretenses." Violators will be pursued. " In turn, the specialist in economic affairs, Bassem Jamil Antoine, said in an interview with Al-Mada that “it is not in the government's interest to raise the prices of foodstuffs,” adding: “But there are intrusive parasitic layers that exploit events and events and monopolize some materials in order to troll in troubled water.” He pointed out that "these classes took advantage of the process of declining the price of the Iraqi dinar against the US dollar, which represented 23.5%."
The economic specialist continues, saying that traders justify the rise in prices as being due to a global rise, which is not true because global markets want to sell after the economic crisis caused by the Corona pandemic. Antoine points out that "there are basic commodities and sub-commodities," indicating that "oil and sugar are rumored to be local production, but rather is semi-manufactured. Sugar comes in brown and goes through a bleaching process only. As for the oil, it comes in large containers and is packaged in cartons." He added, "If prices continue to rise for a period of two months or more, it will have a negative impact on the poor, low-income classes, whose main food is oil, flour and sugar (...)."
Antoine called on the government to "take penalties against those who exploit conditions and those who carry their goods double the price in force in the market."
He concluded his speech by saying, "Permanent reserve stores must be provided to compete and flood the market to quell any movement, because the enemies of Iraq and the neighboring countries are trying to bring down the government by various means through the economic blockade and raising prices."
