Today, Tuesday, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that it is in consultation with the Ministry of Water Resources to agree on a plan for summer and winter farming.
And the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Sahar al-Jubouri, said in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency and followed by "Economy News", that "the Ministry of Water Resources is the responsible party for the water file in Iraq, and that it is done according to the available water storage, expectations about annual rainfall rates, and determining the cultivation plan." Noting that "the Ministry of Agriculture is working hard to exploit the largest possible area in light of the available water, through the use of water by surface or underground irrigation methods or traditional methods, or modern irrigation using fixed and pivotal sprinklers."
He added that "the modern irrigation method reduces water wastage by more than 60%, in addition to providing an increase in the yield of agricultural crops," stressing that "one of the priorities of the Ministry of Agriculture is achieving self-sufficiency in the strategic crops represented by wheat and rye, in addition to the fodder crops (barley). fodder, and yellow corn), with the aim of developing livestock) and vegetable crops, and working on the perpetuation of palm and fruit orchards, to preserve what is achieved from green spaces, exploited agriculturally.
Al-Jubouri pointed out that "the Ministry of Agriculture is working to expand the agricultural area, by directing farmers and agricultural investors to use modern irrigation "technologies" to reduce waste in surface irrigation water, instead of flooding agricultural land with water, and recommends farmers to use irrigation according to the need of agricultural crops for water." Noting that "summer crops do not need large amounts of water."
