The Energy Police Directorate said that 1,012 kilometers of oil pipelines in the country are not protected, and while it considered this distance ineffective, it confirmed that 80% of the oil theft business had ended.
Last year, the Energy Police Directorate forces managed to arrest more than 1,000 violating tankers smuggling oil derivatives, and carried out dozens of arrest warrants for smugglers and violators of oil fields and pipelines extending over an area of 6,000 square kilometers.
Regarding the work of this important segment of our security forces, the Director General of Energy Police, Major General Ghanem Muhammad Jaafar Al-Husseini, told Al-Sabah: “Our mission is to protect oil installations of all kinds, including fields, wells, warehouses, and pipelines, in addition to protecting fixed electrical stations, transmission, distribution, generation and electricity circuits. All over the country, except for the Kurdistan region.
He pointed out that "there are more than 100 controls spread throughout Iraq to follow up on oil smuggling and transportation of oil derivatives that move between provinces, in addition to the presence of a police station in each province to investigate the issue of oil smuggling in accordance with Law No. 41 of 2008."
He pointed out that “one of the most prominent violations of oil theft; Punching oil pipelines in unprotected areas, which decreased by 80%, but it has not ended, and we are still facing many challenges in this matter.”
And he indicated that the Directorate of Energy Police is divided into two branches, the first of which is the Oil Police, and the second is the Electricity Police, noting that “the Oil Police, with its three sections, North, Central and South Oil, protects 48 fields, 3,163 oil wells, 241 government fuel stations and 13 residential oil complexes.”
He pointed out, "The lengths of pipes spread from fields to warehouses and refineries, where our directorate protects about 4796 kilometers, and 1012 kilometers (unprotected)."
Al-Husseini revealed that the Energy Directorate implemented 400 arrest warrants against smugglers of oil derivatives in 2021, adding, “We also filed 1,680 lawsuits against smugglers, and removed 1,006 violators of taboos and building on oil pipelines, most notably in Baghdad in the Nahrawan region and in Abu Dsheer, they built on oil pipelines.” And work is still underway to lift the excesses, and 1017 tanks from large oil tankers have been seized, as well as the various wheels (wheels) that are less than the tank, about 108 wheels.”
The Director of Energy Police indicated that “we cannot forget the hot spots that we are protecting in the Olas and Ajil fields, where 36 terrorist attacks were repelled during 2021, and we gave 4 martyrs and 11 wounded, one of whom is the director of the North Oil Police, and 201 bombs were dismantled by experts.” We also added 6 new controls and two new regiments in 2022 to the Strike Force Brigade.”
