Shafaq News/ On Monday, residents of Mandali and Qazaniya border areas with Iran in Diyala sent distress calls to government agencies to save them from the most severe drought and drinking water crises due to the lack of water revenues and their scarcity.
Shafaq News Agency field surveyed the drought crisis and the scarcity of drinking water in the border town of Qazaniya with Iran, (113 km east of Baquba), whose border villages near Iran depend on the scarce water from wells.
Qais Sadeq Hamid, a resident of the border village of Maysaloon, the farthest corner of Qazaniya, said that the villagers, who number more than 200 families, were threatened with mass exodus due to the scarcity and lack of drinking water and the sharply decreasing groundwater levels.
Hamid added in his interview with Shafaq News Agency, "The village contains only 4 wells that do not meet the simplest needs of the residents, which prompted them to buy drinking water from trucks at a cost of 50 thousand dinars per car."
"Dozens of families have displaced, left their homes and sold their livestock to escape drought and the lack of drinking water," he said, noting that "the majority of the population left their newly built new homes due to the suffocating drought crisis."
Hamid continued, "The limited number of wells, which are only 4, are unable to provide water for the population, and one well is unable to provide water for about 40 or 50 families," calling for "drilling new wells as temporary solutions to prevent the displacement of the population and wait for other solutions during the winter and the flow of torrential water through the border valleys." with Iran.
In turn, the director of the Qazaniya district, and the director of the Mandali district, Mazen Akram, considered that "the year 2022 is the most difficult for the population due to the aggravation of the drought crisis and its repercussions, the decreasing groundwater level, the suspension of the agricultural sector and a significant decrease in the number of livestock."
He pointed out that "a temporary migration of livestock breeders to the Kurdistan Region, central Iraq and other areas in Diyala, in search of the elements of animal husbandry and securing their needs, while another section of the population was forced to permanently and permanently migrate and sell livestock in search of an alternative livelihood source."
Akram indicated that "the percentage of permanent migration amounted to 20% and temporary migration to 50%, and the number of villages that witnessed temporary and permanent displacement is 25 villages in Qazania and 20 villages in Mandali, after the only water sources were cut off from 9 valleys on the Iranian-Iraqi border, two of them in Mandali and 7 others in Qazaniya." ".
On the crisis line, the Director of the General Authority for Ground Water in Diyala, Qais Kamel, revealed to Shafak News Agency that 10 wells were drilled for public benefit in Qazaniya district and 7 others in Mandali district during the current year.
He stressed that "work is underway to dig new wells in both areas during the current year, according to the approved legal and official controls and procedures."
Diyala province confirmed earlier that the wells plan for the current year exceeds 150 wells for the public benefit for the purpose of drinking and basic needs throughout the province.
Diyala is the governorate most affected by the water crisis due to its dependence on external revenues from neighboring countries and the lack of rain in the last winter season, in addition to the depletion of its strategic water reserves in Lake Hamrin.
Mandali is located 93 km east of Baquba. It has a population of about 27 thousand people, an area of 587,000 dunams, and 150,000 dunums of arable land, in addition to another 434,000 dunams unsuitable for agriculture.
Qazaniya district is located to the east of Baqubah, the center of Diyala governorate, about 120 km away from it. It is administratively subject to Baladruz district. Its population is 18,000. It is inhabited by a mixture of Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen. It witnessed the emigration and deportation of hundreds of families during the rule of the former regime due to the Iran-Iraq war.
