    Baghdad: Shatha Al-Janabi

The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Water and Marshlands recommended stopping the agricultural plan in the country completely in the absence of rain during the next winter season, calling for urgent solutions to address the negative effects of the drop in water levels in the country, after Iraq’s water reserves are currently low to 20 billion cubic meters.
     Just.
The country is going through the worst drought in more than 70 years, with neighboring countries continuing to build dams and irrigation projects without Iraq’s knowledge and without paying attention to the repercussions of this on its agricultural sector.
     and environmental.
Adviser to the committee, Adel Al-Mukhtar, said in a speech: The committee called on the three presidencies to use pressure papers on neighboring countries to get them to join international agreements and treaties concerned with distributing water between countries, revealing that the Ministry of Water Resources has prepared a campaign to lift abuses on water quotas.
He revealed that efforts are continuing with the competent authorities to solve the water problem after the country's water reserves have now reached low levels that do not exceed 20 billion cubic meters, with a recommendation in the event of no rain during the next winter season, to stop the agricultural plan completely in
    country.
Al-Mukhtar pointed to the need to develop solutions to address the negative effects of low water levels, the most important of which is the high rates of pollution, especially in the central and southern regions, and the increase in desertification areas, as well as the expansion of the migration of families, especially from the inhabitants of the marshes and villages to city centers, noting that the most important of these treatments include rationalizing water consumption through Stop raising fish, and change old irrigation systems
     for orchards.
He pointed out that the committee had held an emergency meeting a few days ago, to discuss the state of water scarcity, and came up with several recommendations, the most important of which is the launch of an intense international campaign in coordination with international organizations to clarify the dangerous water situation in Iraq, and how the upstream countries continue to build dams and change the courses of common rivers, and their dangerous effects in Iraq. agricultural, economic and social situation.
