In a new threat two days after the Sochi meeting, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that the decision to establish what he called a "safe zone" at a depth of 30 kilometers at Turkey's southern border is still valid, and that his country will continue to "fight terrorism."
Erdogan added in a speech he delivered, Monday, during the opening of the 13th Turkish Ambassadors’ Conference in Ankara: “Soon we will unite the security belt rings by clearing the last areas, where the terrorist organization is present in Syria,” in reference to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Erdogan's statements came two days after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi, after which he stated that he discussed "steps that can be taken against terrorist organizations in Syria."
Recently, Turkish statements have been repeated about launching a new military operation, possibly soon, in western Kurdistan (northeastern Syria), and expanding what Ankara calls “safe” areas, due to what it describes as “terrorist threats” in order to protect the “Turkish” borders and the safety of its national security.
Turkey considers the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), whose mainstay is the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units, as an extension of the PKK, which is listed on terrorist lists in Turkey and many countries, including the United States, and the latter, in turn, considers the SDF a partner in fighting ISIS.
It is noteworthy that the Turkish President stressed, after attending the recent Tehran summit, which he held with his Russian and Iranian counterparts, on July 20, that the file of the military operation in northern Syria will remain on his country's agenda until the concerns about Turkey's national security are dispelled.
