The prominent French thinker Bernard-Henri Levy said that Iraq is a "failed country" and nothing is developing in it except the Kurdistan Region, which wants to stand on its feet and move forward. He also called on the international community to support the Kurds in establishing their independent state.
Levy added in a recent interview with Kurdistan 24 channel, that Iraq “does not have any sovereignty … it is run by Iran, and despite that, the Kurdistan Region is standing on its feet, and it has become stronger and is constantly developing, which makes it much better than Iraq.” .
He expressed his regret that the international community does not realize this, at a time when the international community should note the extent of change that has occurred when comparing Kurdistan and Iraq, and highlight the pivotal and positive role played by the Kurdistan Region.
He went on to say, "Iraq has weak institutions and political parties, and Iran is the one who runs Iraq, and it is in complete control of Iraq."
He continued, "There is no longer sovereignty for Iraq, and Baghdad is under the control of Iranian imperialism, which makes Iraq unable to develop itself, while Tehran takes decisions on its behalf."
Levy pointed out that Tehran maintains armed groups in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and other places in the region, while the international community should highlight this.
In his interview with Kurdistan 24, he said, "The international community should review itself... The source of instability in Iraq lies in Iran."
After he considered Iran "the biggest problem facing Iraq," Levy stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran "does not allow the formation of a government in Iraq."
"If Iraq collapses, the Kurdistan Region will be able to become independent, and if it becomes independent, it will be a stable place in the region, which will benefit the West," Levy said.
Levy stressed that "the international community must allow the Kurds to exercise their democratic right and have their own country... They are still the largest ethnic group in the world without a country."
"This situation must be fixed by establishing a state for the Kurds, because they have always lived under the threat of Baghdad and were at the mercy of the missiles of the armed groups loyal to Iran, and Baghdad always responds with missiles when the Kurds disagree with it," he said.
Levy continued, "The West supports the Kurds, and the Peshmerga is known among Western countries for sacrificing for freedom and democracy. The West appreciates the role of the Peshmerga, and many people and institutions, as well as senior politicians, appreciate their role and the role of the Kurds."
He added that "the United States made a historical mistake when it decided not to support the Kurdistan referendum in 2017, which led to the advance of pro-Iranian militias to kill the Kurds in Kirkuk." He also said that the United States "lost credibility among the Kurds by taking this step."
However, Levy pointed out that "France is one of the best friends of the Kurds, and has always tried to maintain a balance between Kurdistan and Iraq."
