The Pentagon: The American citizen was killed in Baghdad after his kidnapping failed
Shafaq News/ The Pentagon press secretary, Pat Ryder, said today, Tuesday, that the American citizen who was killed in central Baghdad yesterday had nothing to do with the United States army.
"As far as I know, this person was not associated with the US military," Ryder said in a press briefing, adding that "Edward Troel, an English teacher, was killed after the failed attempt to kidnap him." The local authorities are closely investigating the death of American citizen Stephen Edward Troell in Baghdad, and confirmed that they stand ready to provide all necessary assistance,” and concluded, “We have no further comment.”
In a subsequent tweet, the US ambassador to Iraq said, "During these sad times, she extends her thanks and gratitude to the Iraqi people for their messages of support after the brutal murder of Stephen Trol last night in Baghdad."
She explained that "Stephen was in Iraq in his own capacity, doing what he loves, which is working with the Iraqi people," adding, "My sincere condolences to his wife and young children."
Yesterday evening, Monday, unidentified gunmen killed an American citizen, after shooting at a civilian car in the Karrada area in the center of the capital, Baghdad.
On Monday, the Iraqi Interior Minister, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, directed the formation of an investigation committee into the incident, consisting of senior intelligence agency officers, to find out its circumstances.
