    On Thursday, March 23, 2023, the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, met at his residence in New York with the Executive Director of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Rola Dashti.
    During the meeting, they discussed joint cooperation between Iraq and ESCWA in the field of economic and social development, and the importance of developing it to achieve the set goals.
    The President of the Republic affirmed that Iraq suffers from a lack of transboundary water flow, which has increased the rate of drought and desertification in the country, and that it seeks to obtain a sufficient and fair share of water, stressing the need to issue legislation and laws that regulate this process in the riparian countries.
    The President of the Republic pointed out the importance of coordination and joint work with international community organizations to overcome the effects of the water crisis and climate change. He also touched on the issue of the displaced and the necessity of resolving their file by returning them to their areas of residence, pointing in this context to the need for more work and joint efforts to improve their conditions and provide them with the appropriate atmosphere of services and rehabilitation of infrastructure.
    For her part, Rola Dashti affirmed ESCWA's support for promoting economic and social development in Iraq, noting that the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia works in Iraq in areas affected by terrorist groups and focuses its activities on institution building, training and capacity development in managing natural resources.
