International report: Internet applications have revived tourism in Iraq during the last decade

Translated by Hamed Ahmed
A report stated that tourism in Iraq witnessed a quantum leap after entering wide websites during the last decade, stressing that expatriates from other countries, despite the challenges they face, primarily security, want to come to see the country's historical civilization and archaeological sites.
A report by (Satellite Space) news website stated that "the tourism industry in Iraq has witnessed a great recovery, represented by an increase in the number of tourists, since the introduction of wide communication sites on the Internet in the country in 2013."
The report added, "The availability of fast internet applications enabled travelers to view more easily the tourist places and the country's cultural and heritage history and encourage them to book tourist trips to the country."
He pointed out, "The influx of visitors had a positive impact on the country's economy, with the Iraqi government's estimates that the tourism sector's imports during the year 2018 amounted to $1.7 billion."
The report pointed out that “this constituted a significant increase over the sector’s imports during the year 2016, which were around $800 million, and that was before the expansion of Internet service applications.”
He noted, "The Internet service network has enabled the Iraqi government to develop methods of attracting tourists to the country."
And the report added, "Through marketing campaigns on the Internet and social networking sites, government tourism institutions were able to reach a wider audience and provide more recreational opportunities that the country can provide to the visitor."
And he stated, "The Internet has allowed the owners of tourism companies to provide the visitor with more details and information about the historical, cultural and heritage aspects, as well as natural places of tourist attractions."
And the report stated, “These services also include information regarding entry visas, requirements for entering the country, multiple options for booking hotels, and details of other tourist trips in the country.”
He continues, "Internet applications for communication have had a positive impact on the tourism sector in Iraq, giving visitors more options and making traveling to the country from all over the world easier."
And the report added, "While the government and other tourism institutions continue to promote the country's tourist attractions, it is likely that the number of tourists will continue to increase in the coming years."
He added, "Iraq is currently witnessing a phase of transition and transformation from a war zone to a tourist attraction."
The report stressed, "The improvement of Internet service in its wide modern applications had a major role in this transformation and help in making Iraq a more attractive country for tourists from all over the world."
He pointed out that "Iraq has witnessed, in recent years, extensive investment in the digital infrastructure sector related to Internet service."
And the report added, "This included expanding the speed of Internet software applications with the goal of providing a fast and reliable digital network service throughout the country."
He promised, “This is a very important aspect for the tourism sector in Iraq, as many tourists rely on the Internet to plan their travels and stay in touch while they are in their place remotely.”
The report emphasized that "tourists can, with the availability of online communication applications, easily access information about tourist attractions in Iraq and important events and activities in it."
And he continues, "Visitors can also easily book airline tickets, hotels and other tourist services."
The report noted, "The improved internet services also allow tourists to stay in touch with family and friends while they are abroad, which makes their trip more enjoyable."
He continued, "The availability of fast internet service in Iraq had a major role in the high rates of tourist reservations."
The report spoke of “a survey conducted by the Communications Authority in 2019, which showed that the number of subscribers to the (Broadband) telecom service in the country has increased by more than 500,000 subscribers since 2016.”
And he finds, “This growth was the result of the introduction of the modern mobile network application service of the third and fourth generation, which allowed users to quickly access the World Wide Web and the speed of applications used for all communication sites.”
The report added, "These available modern applications enabled travelers in Iraq to access booking sites and their applications on the Internet, such as the (Booking Com) website for reservations, the (Expedia) website, and the (Trip Advisor) website for operating tourist trips."
And he went on to say that "Iraq has become in recent years an important tourist destination that attracts tourists from all over the world, especially to natural areas such as the marshes in southern Iraq, as well as historical sites and monuments."
The report said, "The security aspect is an important factor for the tourist, and the country is still in a state of recovery from wars that lasted for years, which makes the tourist follow up on the latest developments in the country to be more reassured."
He stressed, "The government is currently taking steps to develop the infrastructure related to the reconstruction and improvement of external roads, which is an important factor in the ease of traveler access to tourist sites that are often located in remote areas that are difficult to reach."
And the report went on, that "many aspects push the tourist to travel to Iraq despite all these challenges, in order to see the country's historical civilization and its ancient archaeological sites, as well as the nature sites that make it a unique tourist experience."
