The General Company for Iraqi Railways confirmed the start of studying the suspended train project between Karbala and Najaf, explaining that the train will be very fast with 5-star services.
The company’s general manager, Younis Al-Kaabi, said in a press statement, “The Prime Minister issued directives after the Arbaeen visit to develop plans to accommodate the million visits and the Arbaeen visit, with the large volume of visitors between the governorates of Holy Karbala and Najaf Al-Ashraf, and with expectations of an increase in numbers after the opening of Karbala International Airport. A plan to connect the two governorates with a funicular train powered by clean energy.”
Al-Kaabi added, “The train passes through Karbala and Najaf airports and is designated for visitors and ordinary travelers on normal days. It would contribute to reducing accidents, as it reduces car travel on the land road linking the two governorates. It also provides service, luxury, and speed, as it runs at a speed of 140 to 160 kilometers per hour.” It works with clean energy.”
He continued, “The specifications that were set for this train are high and commensurate with the international status of the two holy cities, which are visited by visitors from various countries of the world.”
Al-Kaabi stated, “The routes were revealed in the presence of the Prime Minister’s advisor and directors from transport, roads and bridges, and in the presence of the governors of both governorates. The proposed initial route was agreed upon and the designs will be transferred to an international consulting company to design this road and train. There are many international companies nominated for such a project and we will certainly go.” To the best option.”
He stated, “The project will be under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport, as the sectoral authority, and in cooperation with the relevant authorities in the governorates of Najaf, Karbala, and the Holy Shrines, and in cooperation with the Department of Roads and Bridges, the Shiite Endowment, and the Hajj and Umrah Authority, as they are the authority concerned with the visit.”
Regarding the reality of railways and trains in Iraq in general, Al-Kaabi explained, “The last batch of trains arrived at the department in 2014, and there is a plan to use modern trains that provide five-star service to travelers in terms of speed, service, comfort, and the stations they stop at.”
He added, “This plan requires the import of modern trains, which will be enhanced by the development road project, as there will be high-speed trains that will shorten the distances between cities, and will be accompanied by modernization of the railway lines.”
