As the winter season approaches and large amounts of rain are expected, Baghdad residents fear that the capital will sink, causing damage to their homes and disrupting their businesses. They wonder: Will Baghdad sink this year as well?
The Ministry of Water Resources had confirmed that Iraq would witness heavy amounts of rain more than its normal rates, noting that these amounts would contribute to sheltering dams and natural storage lakes.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources, Khaled Shamal, told Al Mada, “Iraq will witness heavy amounts of rain more than their normal rates, which will lead to a rise in the levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and strengthen the agricultural plan for the winter season,” noting that “the amounts of falling water will contribute to “Housing dams and natural storage lakes.”
For his part, the spokesman for the Baghdad Municipality, Muhammad Al-Rubaie, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that “the Baghdad Municipality’s preparations to receive the winter season are greater than last year’s preparations, as it depends on expanding emergency lines and solving the problem of eclipses in sewage pipes in the areas of Karrada, Adhamiya, Al-Mansour, and New Baghdad.” ", adding that "the sewer pipes in these cities have become an investigation, and the Baghdad Municipality has sought the help of companies with specialized and advanced equipment that detect prior eclipses."
The spokesman for the Baghdad Municipality confirmed, “If the capital Baghdad had normal rains of 36 millimeters per minute, rainwater drainage operations would be easy, and if the rain continued for 7 hours with an intensity of up to 50 millimeters, it would certainly flood for several hours until the emergency effort was mobilized.”
He continued, “There is no going back to previous years when the capital was flooded for 13 days or more, and the ministry’s teams are prepared for heavy rains.”
Al-Rubaie pointed out that “the Baghdad Municipality will suffer from two things. The first is the flooding of the agricultural areas in which the service effort teams work, as they have not had sewage sewers for the past 20 years and contain several projects.”
He continued, "The second matter is that the Prime Minister, along with the Baghdad Municipality and the Ministry of Construction and Housing, opened 19 projects to relieve traffic congestion, the most prominent of which are at Al-Nisour intersection, the College of Fine Arts square, and Al-Mashn intersection. These are considered work sites and there are excavation operations to construct tunnels and long bridges. They will certainly flood when rain falls." The Municipality of Baghdad will suffer from it
