Minister of Resources: We seek to conclude agreements that guarantee our water rights

began yesterday, Sunday, the activities of Cairo Water Week in its sixth edition, with the participation of the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab, and will continue until next November 2, under the title “Working on Adaptation in the Water Sector for Sustainability.”
The Minister of Resources said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: There are great challenges that must be faced regarding water, and we have common problems with the Egyptian side, noting that in Iraq we have undertaken many projects to improve the environment and climate by controlling emitted gases, in addition to exploiting groundwater.
He pointed out the continuation of negotiations with Turkey and Iran and is in the process of concluding an agreement with Turkey that preserves our water rights, as 70 percent of our water sources come from Turkey, in addition to negotiating to open the Karun River, which has greatly affected the southern regions.
The minister explained that we have action on the Diyala Basin, pointing out that imports are currently good at Badrakhan Dam, stressing that all our dams are stable and working well, especially the Mosul Dam.
The activities of the first day witnessed many technical sessions and discussions, including a symposium of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) entitled Urban Planning for Managing Water Scarcity in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as a technical session entitled Women’s Leadership in Water Diplomacy and the Interconnection of Water, Food, Energy and the Environment in... Middle East and North Africa.
In contrast, the National Water Research Center held a technical session on the intelligence of water resources management, in addition to the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, in partnership with the Permanent Joint Technical Committee for Nile Water, organizing two sessions on managing cooperation in river basins.
Among the events on the sidelines of Cairo Week is a high-level session on harnessing the successful transition of the water agenda from the climate conference, as well as COP27, to the COP28 climate conference.
