The Holy Najaf: Hussein Al-Kaabi
The Najaf Environment Directorate called for investing in the components of eco-tourism in the Najaf Sea, in addition to the importance of finding a solution to the problem of desertification in the governorate due to the negative impacts on the agricultural and economic reality and societal stability.
This came during a symposium organized by the Directorate in cooperation with the Directorate of Agriculture to discuss ways to address environmental pollution and reduce the effects of climate change.
On the sidelines of the symposium, Dr. Haider Falih Al-Hadrawi, Director of the Climate Change and Combating Desertification Unit in the Najaf Environment, told Al-Sabah: There are many tangible phenomena that have made Iraq one of the five countries most affected by climate change, most notably the decline of vegetation cover, which is a problem we have been suffering from since... More than 20 years, due to the leveling of agricultural lands and their conversion to housing or the establishment of investment projects, indicating that the farmers’ lack of government support led them to leave agriculture and go to work in other fields.
He added that Iraq has great potential for eco-tourism, which could generate significant economic resources if activated and invested. For example, Iraq is located on the migration path of more than 300 species of migratory birds from the cold regions of northern Europe and Central Asia, and in Najaf these birds gather. In the Bahr al-Najaf region, it has been declared a national natural reserve to preserve this wealth and protect it from the threat of extinction.
He pointed out the possibility of exploiting this region by establishing projects that enhance the environmental reality there and make it a tourist destination with economic returns for the governorate. There is also renewable energy, which is part of the concept of sustainable development, and which can be resorted to as one of the important treatments for climate change and environmental pollution, as it preserves the environment. It reduces waste in the consumption of natural resources.
Al-Hadrawi called for activating projects to combat desertification, launching afforestation campaigns to increase vegetation cover, and holding awareness lectures and seminars in schools and universities to inform the new generation of the dangers of desertification and its negative effects on the country’s present and future.
