    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs confirmed today, Wednesday, that a large percentage of those who practice begging receive salaries and benefits, while it announced the deportation of a large number of beggars of Arab and Asian nationalities during the past weeks.
The ministry’s media spokesman, Najm Al-Aqabi, said, “The phenomenon of begging has become a source of income for many families who adopt it as a profession in which all their members participate. This prompted the ministry, in order to limit it, to include it in social benefits. However, despite the inclusion of a large percentage of them and their signing of a pledge... “My line is not to return to the street, but its members are still openly begging,” he said, indicating “the formation of a committee with the Ministry of Interior to eliminate this phenomenon.”
He added, "There are large numbers of beggars with Syrian, Pakistani, and Indian nationalities who enter the country during the season of religious visits or for tourism purposes and then practice begging, which prompted the Residence Department at the Ministry of Interior to deport a large number of them during the past weeks."
He stated: “More than 45 thousand orphans were registered through the electronic window for inclusion in Baghdad and the governorates,” pointing out that “the Ministry of Labor has begun including the elderly, orphans, and the homeless with salaries and social protection subsidies to ensure a decent living for them, as they are the most fragile in society.”
He concluded by saying that “ The Ministry has allocated sufficient amounts to cover all eligible beneficiaries, including beggars.”
