The International Atomic Energy Agency announced that Iraq has begun a new phase in the field of nuclear energy and the practice of its nuclear activity.
A statement by the Center for Radiation Protection quoted a post by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, on the LinkedIn website, in which he said, “Nearly 43 years after Israel destroyed the first Iraqi nuclear reactor that was built, Iraq today begins a new phase in the field of nuclear energy and its activity.” Nuclear power for peaceful purposes, with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and working to develop a road map to develop Iraq’s work, build infrastructure, and obtain nuclear technology in peaceful fields.”
The Director General of the Radiation Protection Center, Sabah Al-Husseini, indicated, according to the statement, that “great achievements have been made in the field of removing the effects of radioactive contamination that resulted from the successive wars of the previous regime and the effects they left on the environment of Iraq, and that the specialized technical teams, in cooperation with a number of governments The local government in a number of governorates made great efforts and worked around the clock and for many months to achieve the largest and most basic goal, which is to declare Iraq free from the effects of radioactive contamination. This is certainly a major national achievement that is consistent with international standards and with the principles of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
He noted, "the important supervisory role played by the Radiation Protection Center in monitoring radioactive waste management activities throughout Iraq and the Center's supervisory procedures in improving the radioactive environmental reality through monitoring the activities of dismantling and liquidating the destroyed nuclear facilities affiliated with the former Iraqi nuclear program, and the Center's procedures." In reducing the spread of radioactive contamination.
He added, "The center, in coordination with other parties represented by the directorates of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, was able to remove many of the radioactive contaminants with central government support," pointing out that "there are areas that are still witnessing radioactive contamination and work is underway to remove it through scientific and technical procedures, to declare Iraq Free of radioactive contamination, and attention is paid to completing the file to the fullest extent to protect the Iraqi environment and citizens from radiation through the implementation of the national plan to eliminate radioactive contamination in Iraq, which was approved by the distinguished Council of Ministers and began to be funded in 2023.”
The statement continued, "Director General of the Nuclear Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, confirmed during his recent visit to Iraq, at the head of a delegation of agency experts, that the agency is diagnosing the needs and working to provide all the support these specialized Iraqi bodies require for the success of their work."
He stressed, "There are pillars on which we rely in cooperation with Iraq, most notably support for the establishment of a peaceful nuclear program there, and we are keen to achieve it," and that "Al-Tuwaitha, which was once a source of global concern, now symbolizes a path full of hope towards a successful treatment."
He added, "Turning the page on the past and cleansing Iraq of its effects are among the priorities of working with Iraq," noting that "beginning to develop a plan to enable Iraq to use peaceful applications of atomic energy in the fields of health, agriculture, industry, and clean energy in Iraq."
He continued, "Technical cooperation programs and projects over the past years have contributed to enhancing the optimal and secure use of radiological and nuclear technology at the national level and developing the regulatory work system through legislating laws, instructions and controls for monitoring radiological and nuclear activities, providing radiological and nuclear safety requirements and building the supervisory capabilities of cadres." The national regulatory bodies, represented by the Center for Radiation Protection, are in addition to the agency’s main and effective role in supporting national efforts in the field of liquidation and dismantling of destroyed nuclear facilities and managing the radioactive waste generated from them.”
The statement continued, “The program to liquidate the destroyed nuclear facilities and sites in Iraq, which was launched under the supervision and follow-up of the International Energy Agency and implemented by the formations of the Atomic Energy Authority and the former Ministry of Science and Technology, is considered one of the important national projects with a great impact on improving the environmental reality in Iraq, as it represents the survival of These facilities pose a threat to the health of citizens and the environment.”
