The components of the Kurdistan Region called for pressure on the Iraqi authorities to adhere to the constitution, not to overthrow it, and to adhere to the principle of separation of powers.
The Christian representative, Anu Jawhar, said in a press conference on Wednesday, “The Federal Court ruled that the seats of the components in the Kurdistan Parliament were unconstitutional, and all the seats of the Turkmen, Chaldeans, Assyrians, Syriacs, and Armenians were suspended.”
He added: The court's decision to cancel the component seats came as a result of a misleading lawsuit submitted by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and therefore the Federal Court's decision is considered an unjust decision.
He continued: Since the establishment of the Kurdistan Parliament in 1992, political rights have been provided to all religious and national components.
He added: After the uprising, the Kurdistan Region turned into a place and a safe haven for all religious and national components who took refuge there to escape the oppression and oppression of Saddam Hussein.
He said: These decisions are in the interest of a certain party at the expense of the components, which constitutes a danger to Iraq, which violates the rights of the Turkmen and Christians, and this is an attempt to transform the Parliament of Kurdistan from a parliament that is nationally and religiously diverse into a Kurdish Muslim parliament only.
He pointed out, “We, as representatives of the Turkmen and Christians, demand pressure on the Iraqi authorities to adhere to the constitution and not overthrow it, and to adhere to the principle of separation of powers.”
According to Article 36 of the Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections Law, there are five seats for the Chaldeans, Syriacs, and Assyrians, one seat for the Armenians, and five seats for the Turkmen.
On February 21, 2024, the Federal Supreme Court issued several decisions regarding the Kurdistan Regional Elections Law, which are:
First - The Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq is responsible for conducting and supervising the sixth round of parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, instead of the Kurdistan Regional Commission for Referendum and Elections.
Second - Regarding the sixth round of Kurdistan Parliament elections; The Kurdistan Region is divided into four electoral districts.
Third: Abolishing the 11 quota seats and deeming them unconstitutional. Accordingly, the total number of seats in the Kurdistan Parliament becomes 100 seats instead of 111 seats.
