Shafaq News/ The components included in the quota seats in the Kurdistan Region renewed, on Tuesday, their requests to the Federal Court (the highest judicial authority in Iraq) for the lawsuits filed with it regarding those seats and the conduct of the parliamentary elections scheduled to be held next February.
The Regional Minister for Components Affairs, Aydan Marouf, said in a press conference held today, attended by a Shafaq News Agency correspondent, that the status of components is an important and sensitive issue that must be taken into account, stressing that the quota seats were regulated by law, and it is a legitimate right for components in the Kurdistan Region to participate in the elections and the political process.
He added that the situation of the components in Kurdistan is very good, and they enjoy support from the regional government in consolidating their rights and coexistence between religions and sects.
Marouf went on to say that the issue of the quota was inserted into politics, and it had a bad impact because of its interference in their affairs, and the components are not a party to this problem and we do not want to be the cause of problems between the political parties in the Kurdistan Region.
The Minister also called on the Federal Court to dismiss the lawsuits filed against the quota of components in the region at the session scheduled to be held on February 4.
This comes at a time when there are two lawsuits filed by Kurdistan political parties in the Federal Court regarding the quota seats and the conduct of the Kurdistan Parliament elections. They were scheduled to be decided on the third of last December, but they were postponed.
Complaints were submitted against five articles of the Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections Law, related to the number of seats, single and multiple electoral districts, and the number of quota seats. They were submitted by Ziad Jabbar, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan bloc in the fifth Kurdistan parliamentary session, and Aman Najib Shamoun, the representative of Christians in the Sulaymaniyah Provincial Council. .
According to Article 36 of the legislative elections law in the region, five quota seats in the Kurdistan Parliament will be allocated to the Chaldeans, Syriacs, and Assyrians, with one seat for the Armenian component, as well as five seats for the Turkmen.
In 1992, the first parliamentary elections were held in Kurdistan. In 2004, the Election Law was amended to remove Article 9, which stipulated that the Kurdistan region must consist of several electoral districts.
