Iraqis will bid farewell to Wi-Fi and towers soon

The Minister of Communications, Dr. Hiyam Al-Yasiri, acknowledged that Iraq is moving in parallel with the world in the field of artificial intelligence, stressing that the ministry will be “paperless” during the next few phases, while announcing the imminent gradual extinction of the service using “Wi-Fi” technology (constellations). And moving to the (FTTH) service, Al-Yasiri mentioned the imminent announcement of the name of the company operating the fifth generation technology “5G”.
Al-Yasiri said in her speech at the Iraqi Telecommunications Summit, yesterday, Sunday, which “Al-Sabah” attended: “The government has set comprehensive digital transformation as a standard for one of its products, as it formed a higher committee headed by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, which took it upon itself to evaluate the reality of the state of digital transformation in Iraq and began... “With objective assessment procedures, and developing an integrated policy on digitization in Iraq.”
She pointed out, “The Ministry has initiated a comprehensive automation project to achieve the ambition of (a paperless ministry) to be a model in all its aspects. The project was announced as a tender and will close soon to begin its implementation procedures.”
She stated, “In the coming days, the Ministry will implement a deliberate, scheduled plan that includes gradually turning off the Wi-Fi service (towers) and moving to FTTH service in many areas of Baghdad and the governorates in which the establishment of two fiber-optic networks has been completed.”
The Minister called on citizens to go to “subscribe to optical cable services because it provides fast service with superior quality at subsidized prices, and to abandon subscription to Wi-Fi service because it provides weak and slow Internet service.” Regarding the national mobile phone license for 5G technology, she said: “ We will soon announce the name of the operator that will enter Iraq to operate the fifth generation license.”
He added, “The Ministry has communicated with international organizations regarding artificial intelligence, where it has begun developing plans and strategies for this type of technology, and there is a higher committee headed by Al-Sudani to develop its systems and policies in Iraq, which is moving in parallel with the world and has not lagged behind it.”
She stressed, “The government possesses political and security stability, which has paved the way for the advancement of multiple service fields, including the communications sector, and there is great cooperation between the ministry and the Media and Communications Authority, but the absence of legislation and the failure to enact communications laws over the past two decades has created some real problems,” noting. “These intersections are close to being resolved and dots are put on the letters for the work of both the ministry and the authority.”
Al-Yasiri considered, “Iraq is a corridor competing with the Suez Canal for international communications, as the ministry signed contracts with Kuwait through Al-Zajel Company, and with the Saudi company STC, in order to lower a submarine cable at Al-Faw station, and there are ongoing negotiations at the highest levels with the Emirati telecommunications company to lower a fourth submarine cable.” There are ongoing procedures with the Omani company Omantel to pass international communications.”
She explained, “A transit line was established within the (Development Road) where the designs for this project were completed, and negotiations are underway to establish another independent transit network in addition to our currently operating networks, which helped activate commercial work on the issue of transit,” explaining this by “setting policies.” Flexible pricing that relies on direct negotiation with customers, keeping up with global market prices, and not adhering to pricing policies or fixed prices has failed the transit market in Iraq over the past years.”
For his part, the Communications and Information Technology Advisor, Qasim Al-Hassani, said: “Iraq, as a regional corridor, will face major investments not only for Arab countries but even for the world, and it will also be a strong competitor to the Republic of Egypt in this field.”
Al-Hassani added, in an interview with Al-Sabah, that “Iraq must work on digital transformation and increase the efforts made in this field, reaching cultural and information transformations and focusing on financial transformations, which will make Iraq more stable and attractive to international companies and foreign investors.”
