Baghdad Today - Baghdad
MP Mohammed Al-Khafaji confirmed, today, Saturday (June 29, 2024), the imminent opening of the file of private universities in Iraq, most of which have been transformed into unsound “profit-making projects” subject to the “blackmail” of some officials.
Al-Khafaji said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "There is no disagreement about the importance of private universities and their role in containing a large percentage of students in different specializations, but the most important question is how many solid universities there are out of the total number of those currently present, which ranges from 70-80 universities and colleges," indicating that "what is solid among them, can be counted on the fingers of one hand because most of them have been transformed into profitable projects and they suffer from a defect in the infrastructure and the scientific level, which raises many question marks."
He added, "The recent evaluation exams revealed a large number of negatives in most private universities, including accepting grades of 50%, which is considered a disaster, and the admission schedules must be reconsidered in a way that contributes to strengthening and correcting the scientific process."
He pointed out that "some universities are subject to blackmail by some officials in various ways, and there are leaves that are prohibited according to the principle of favoritism and not academic integrity and its conditions and controls," stressing that "the Higher Education Committee takes on professional roles in monitoring and following up on a very important file, and there are indeed many files that will be opened soon."
He continued: “There is no policy to close private universities or prevent the establishment of others, but we seek to correct their paths according to basic principles, which are scientific sobriety, actual adherence to controls and instructions, and emphasizing the importance of raising the academic level of students, and that none of them be subject to blackmail, and that their establishment be according to objective and transparent paths from While adhering to the terms and instructions.
Shalal Al-Jubouri, Director General of the Department of Studies, Planning and Follow-up, and then the Department of Research and Development at the Ministry of Higher Education, spoke about it previously, saying, “After we had a national strategy for establishing colleges and universities, establishing has now become random, and anyone who has money can do it, even if he is a coachman (a horse-drawn carriage driver).”
Private education became without controls, so that obtaining a certificate became available to anyone. The major catastrophe occurred in medical education, as there were approximately 50 colleges of dentistry and the same colleges of pharmacy. Because the colleges of dentistry and pharmacy were full of students, the unions of doctors, dentists, and pharmacists announced the cancellation of appointments for graduates due to... Low professional level.
